Happy Wednesday! My hints for today have to do with packing and moving. We are packing up our apartment and moving to our new home next month. While this is a very exciting time, it’s also an extremely busy time. This may surprise you – but I want to pack in an organized way so we start fresh and organized at our new home. I have been tempted to buy all those fancy moving organizational stickers and items from The Container Store and Staples. But I have stopped myself! Don’t spend money on that! I say to myself – think of all the other things you will want to buy when you get to your new home!
HHH#1 – DIY organize when moving – save the money for stuff for your new house that you won’t be throwing out once you unpack!
Here are the signs I have made right here on my computer. I had tons of color paper left over from last summer’s sale when we sold our family home. We are using them on every box we pack. My husband and I are committed to packing a few boxes everyday. We started on Sunday and we are doing pretty well!
HHH#1 – PURGE, PURGE, PURGE when moving! If you haven’t seen it/ moved it/ used it/ wore it/ in awhile – then you can live without it. Don’t take it with you to collect dust at your new place!
We have a box for all the stuff we aren’t taking with us … it’s already pretty full and we just got started! Bare with me — there is going to be a lot of moving / packing talk on My Color Coded Life this next month. Then on to the fun stuff – remodeling!! Have a great Wednesday – the weekend is almost here. Thanks for reading.
I did this when I moved from my apartment into my house. I also used matching signs on the doors of all the rooms so the movers (aka my family and friends) could keep moving stuff even if I was otherwise occupied. It seemed to work pretty well. The entire move took less than 3 hours. It would have been half that if we could have fit everything into the moving truck in one load! You can also use coordinating post-it notes for furniture and non-boxed items.
Love the idea for signs on the rooms – and post-it for furniture! Thanks, Jessi!
When we were packing up, we had to get rid a ton of stuff that had been stored in our storage unit (didn’t you see Joe there? Or was it at Home Depot?) Anyway, there were tons of boxes full my father’s books, records, CDs, VHS tapes….I donated everything. If you have anything you want to donate there are two awesome places you can donate to: phillyaidsthrift.com takes pretty much anything you have: we brought clothes and toys there. All my father’s things that I mentioned above we’re donated to The Book Corner-it is an awesome store behind the main library. They took everything and it made me happy to know others would benefit from all that my dad loved. The library also has a store in 7th and Chestnut called The Next Page but I didn’t have a great experience there so just go to The Book Corner 🙂
Good luck! We are going to have to pack up again soon because we are looking for a new apartment out here. I’m hoping I get some good pointers from you while you are packing up to make my next move a little easier!
Thanks for all this advice Maria! I did see Joe right before your move at the storage unit – we were putting stuff in there from my mother’s! Now we will be moving it out to our new house. The Book Corner is great. and great to hear of a place that takes used toys – so many places won’t. Best of luck with your apartment hunting! Do you ever see yourself coming back to Philly or is Florida way too good to leave??
