Happy Friday! Here are all the things I’m loving this week!

On TV –  The new season of America’s Got Talent is underway. I have never watched this show before, but was intrigued to tune in after seeing many stories and social media posts about the 12 year old ukulele playing girl that got the Willy Wonka golden ticket. I caught up with the episodes on demand and watched episode three in real time. The golden buzzer has been rung in each episode, first by Mel B, next by Howie, and this week, by Heidi. Scenes for next week show Simon reaching for it …

Patio Makeover

After showing pictures of my mother-in-law’s successful porch design to my friend, she asked for my help getting her patio set up. Her needs: place to grill and to eat, a spot to relax, an area for the kids to play and a fun, bright design that would make her forget she rented her shore house out for the summer! She also asked for different storage areas for the excess stuff that accumulates each day. Here are some before pictures:

She is not in love with these pillow cushions – but did not want to spend money on new ones so she wanted to work around these colors.

Off to Home Depot and Michael’s we went! We debated paint colors and bought a few fun decorative pieces, then we returned to her home and got to work! (I also momentarily lost my phone in the paint aisle which caused some minor panic attacks but it was all good in the end…)

Are you ready for the big reveal???  Drumroll…..

Plastic storage tubs corral toys together, but can also be used to stash drinks and ice when having guests over.

A few days later she sent me another after shot … she had continued painting (see the blue storage bins near the sliding glass door) and moved the furniture around some. I told her if she is anything like me, she would rearrange the furniture 15 more times throughout the summer!

Happy Friday! Here are all the things I’m loving this week!

On TV –  Admittedly, I am just catching up on some season finales that happened over the past few weeks. Dick Wolf – WHAT are you doing to me?? Killing off the sons of high ranking police officers on two different shows, Chicago PD and SVU?

…and I CANNOT get over ABC cancelling Nashville.  I read the reports but didn’t want to believe it. Until the season finale became the series finale. Now we will never know the fate of Juliette’s plane. Unless another network picks it up – please!! #BringBackNashville

On the Web – Country Living’s 50 Ideas that will Beautify Your Yard (Without Breaking the Bank) So many adorable ideas to spruce up any backyard space. Love this hopscotch board made with colorful pavers from Happiness is Homemade.

This hopscotch board—made out of pavers—works double-time as a game for kids (or adults!) and a fun way to add a pop of bright color to your lawn.
Get the tutorial at Happiness is Homemade.

For the Piggy Bank – The end of the school year is a time when I look back to see what I’ve saved for the year, evaluate if it’s time to up retirement contributions, and figure out what are the priorities we should be saving for next year. Read Money magazine’s The Five Most Important Years of Your Financial Life for tips on what you should be saving at certain ages. It’s time for me to “Turn Up the Volume!”

On the To-Do List – I love my city in the summer! This is an exciting month here in Philadelphia. Check out the Top Things To Do in Philadelphia In June 2016 From Art Festivals, Outdoor Movies, and Night Markets, to Center City Sips and Beer Gardens – there is something for everyone!

Porch Makeover for My Mother-in-Law

For Mother’s Day, I told my mother-in-law I would like to set-up and design her porch. I knew she would like a place of her own to sit, relax, drink her tea and not be bothered by anyone!

This is what I had to work with:

The floor of the porch looks like this:

floor rhodie

She had this furniture in her garage:

couch rhoidechair rhodietable rhodie

And she bought these pillows:

pillows rhodie

With this information – I got to work!

It took me (and my husband who helped paint) one day to design and set up the porch. She was home while we were painting out back, but she left for a little while and I was able to set everything up so she could get the “big reveal” moment. (minus a huge Fixer Upper style before photo!)

finished porch

I shopped mainly in her own house. Everyone has extra stuff that accumulates in our homes. Before going out and buying something new – walk thru your home and see what you can re-purpose! (Color-coded tip – start picking like color items, then try them out in the design and edit as necessary.)

I collected up old plastic flower pots, tins, and bins she had around her home and painted them all one color (my signature apple green – which I can work into ANY design!)

She had this perfectly matching maroon picnic basket in her dining room. The tin was from an Edible Arrangements gift. The F is magnetic (from Michael’s) and stuck right to the tin making this an easy monogram project.

I made this wreath as her Mother’s Day gift which I new I would incorporate into the final look.

Happy Friday! Here are all the things I’m loving this week!

On TV –  This week’s episode “Didn’t Expect It To Go Down this Way” on Nashville was filled with drama from Autumn playing Scarlett and Gunnar against each other to Maddie trying to emancipate Rayna and Deacon. But Juliette is back in full force! Once she sees sparks flying between Avery and Layla on stage she got herself right where she wanted to be – back on the tour with all of them. Don’t throw dirt on her grave just yet!

On the Page – Family Fun Magazine May 2016 – Ideas for all my favorite May events – Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Week and Cinco de Mayo, plus an article on how to declutter using color?!!? Yes, please!

On the Bucket List – Time to start thinking about summer vacations! This list ranges from Sesame Place to Buckingham Palace. I WISH each destination had a picture – but still an awesome comprehensive bucket list!  40 must see places to take your kids before they are grown from the Today Show Parent page.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – Recap Season 1

Anyone else excited that today Netflix releases Season 2 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? Here’s a quick recap so you will recall what is happening with your favorite Mole woman from Durnsville, Indiana.

The series begins the day Kimmy Schmidt and three other women are discovered and released from an underground bunker after being held in captivity for 15 years by a reverand who told them the apocolypse had destroyed everything on Earth. Immediately following an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show, Kimmy jumps out of the van declaring she staying in New York City. With a ton of cash in her backback (from The Mole Women Charity Fund) she walks the streets in pursuit of a place to live and a job.

Enter Lillian (her new landlord) and Titus Andronomos (her new roomate.) Both are eccentric characters who try and help Kimmy adjust to life in the big city, for example, making her write down every 90s phrase she uses in a notebook labeled “Things People Don’t Say Anymore.” Dancing one night in a club, Kimmy’s backpack is stolen along with all of her money.

After seeing the same child shoplifting in two different locations, Kimmy drags him to his home to speak to his parents. Enter Jacqueline Voorhees. A bitter, socialite, second-wife who first mistakes Kimmy for the dog masseuse. She ends up hiring Kimmy as a nanny and spends most of season one trying to get her husband, Mr. Voorhees, to come home from a business trip that has lasted months. Jacqueline’s step-daughter Xanthippe and her wild, rebellious, pill-popping friends, torture Kimmy, until it is finally revealed Xan is a a good girl, bird watching, band geek. Eventually Mrs. Voorhees learns of her husband’s infidelity and begins divorce proceedings. Kimmy supports her and encourages to get out of the marriage. Flashbacks show Jacqueline is Native American and she left her reservation in search of a bigger, flashier life.

Kimmy finds herself in the middle of a love triangle bewteen Logan, a wealthy self-proclained Daddy’s Boy who meets Kimmy at a Voorhees dinner party and Dong Nguyen, an illegal immigrant from her GED class who helps tutor her in math. The men get in a fight over her at her 30th birthday party. Kimmy eventually picks Dong as the man she has feelings for, but it may be too late, as Logan has already reported his illegal status to the authorities.

When we last saw Kimmy, she has just saved the day in a Legally Blonde moment of cross-examining The Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne. It turns out that his Celebrity Apprentice audition tape is just the proof everyone needed to finalize realize he did NOT think that an apocalypse was coming. This excitment doesn’t last too long for Kimmy. In the final moments of Season 1, we hear wedding bells in more than one unexpected place. Titus Andromedon has a wife?! And Dong married another woman from their GED class?

There are a lot of terrific guest stars: Jon Hamm as The Reverend, Tina Fey and Jerry Minor as Marcia Clark and Chris Darden, Martin Short as Jacqueline’s plastic surgeon, and Kiernan Shipka as Kymmi, Kimmy’s half-sister.

Bring on Season 2! Happy binge watching this weekend!

My Friday Favorites 04.08.16

I’m two days late with my favorites this week! Between catching up on all my TVs shows on the DVR and watching / celebrating Villanova basketball win the National Championship – I didn’t have time to write this post! But, I still loved some things this week – so here we go…

On TV –  Funnyman Cyrus is back with some one-liners that made him the loveable/hatable character we all obsessed over in Season 1. But other people made some big mistakes on Scandal this week…Abby, Vice-President Nichols and Olivia, who may have thrown away her white hat forever.

On the Page – HGTV Magazine‘s May issue is full of all my favorite things – tips, tricks and COLOR! Check out the Pop of Color article that shows how to decorate using twelve different vibrant colors like hot pink, yellow, and lime. The article isn’t online yet, but here are other ideas from HGTV about using pops of color.

On the Web – Kids Birthday Party Planning on a Budget from Sunshine and HurricanesThis is the time of year when I start thinking about my daughter’s June birthday. I’ve done the over-the-top party stuff and have kept it simple by asking a few kids to the movies. Here are some good tips on how to not break the bank – which at the end of the birth-day – is totally unnecessary!

On InstagramLoving these pink lockers and vintage map from cameo_gypsy. I’m thinking I need some lockers in my new laundry room!

On the Scoreboard –  My alma mater, the Villanova Wildcats, won the NCAA National Championship by defeating North Carolina with a buzzer beating three pointer! Congratulations to Kris Jenkins for hitting the winning shot, the rest of the team, and Coach Wright for an amazing season. V for Villanova, V for Victory.

Here is me with two of my college roomies – partying like it’s 1993!

My Friday Favorites 04.01.16

On TV –  Sometimes I get so caught up with Olivia Pope that I forget about my first favorite TV Olivia: Olivia Benson from Law & Order: SVU. The last few episodes have been great including this week’s Episode 18 “Sheltered Outcasts” directed by Mariska Hargitay and guest starring Michael Rapaport. Carisi is becoming one of my favorite characters! I have a couple of questions, feel free to comment your answers and opinions below! In Episode 17 “Unholiest Alliance,” Olivia’s relationship with Ed Tucker is completely revealed. Did we, the audience, already know this? This show is sneaky for hinting around relationships and then never addressing it again (Rollins & Amaro.) Does anyone else think Tucker and Sergeant Voight from Chicago P.D. are very similar? Olivia Benson has a type…and we can just throw Stabler into that list while we are at it! Speaking of Stabler, Christopher Meloni was interviewed this week on Inside the Actor’s Studio and he is still asked about Stabler and Benson’s relationship all these years later.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - Season 17

On the Web – My daughter is about to turn 5 and start kindergarten in the fall. Naturally, I clicked on  5 Things I Wish I Knew Before my Child Started Kindergarten from House of Rose when I came across it online. This is a great list that had me laughing – the parties!!

5 Things I Wish I'd Known Before My Child Started Kindergarten by

On Instagram I’m loving this idea of a monogrammed letter on the front door wreath from Sugar Bee Crafts. I might have to hit Michael’s this weekend to look at letters. Add flowers on the wreath and an aqua background – this front door is perfection!

In the Shopping Cart – Spring Blend coffee from The Fresh Market. I’ll admit the pretty aqua and yellow packaging is what really caught my eye, but now that I’ve been brewing this coffee all week, I’m hooked! A light creamy blend of caramel and butterscotch!? Yes, please!

On the Wish List – Picturing this amazing owl chair from Anthropologie somewhere in my house. My bedroom as a reading nook? Olivia’s room? Our new finished basement? Oh the possibilities!

On the Scoreboard –  Good luck to my alma mater, the Villnova Wildcats, as they play in the final four this weekend! V for Villanova, V for Victory.

Happy Friday! What are you loving this week? Leave me a comment and let me know. Have a great weekend!
