My Friday Favorites 03.31.17

Happy Friday! Here is my roundup of the things I’m loving this week.

On TV – Last night’s Grey’s Anatomy episode reminded me why I loved the show when it first began. From the first moment with a Meredith voiceover talking about her Mom, to the doctors disagreeing over a patient’s treatment because the stakes are so high, this was old school Grey’s Anatomy! It even felt like it was shot in a reminiscent way (an elevator door coming between possible love, a daughter following her mother out of an ambulance) so it did not surprise me when I realized that it was Ellen Pompeo’s director debut. What was the rest of Ellis’s sentence??? Tell Meredith not to……what do you think?

GHK040117_051On the Web – This is the time of year that I am not always thrilled at work. As a teacher, the “standardized testing season” can be long, unfulfilling, and demoralizing for students and teachers alike. Every teacher should read I Can’t Answer These Texas Standardized Test Questions About My Own Poems by Sara Holbrook. The poet admits that she cannot answer questions on a 7th grade standardized test about poems she authored. Teachers – just breathe! It will all be over soon! (Sidebar – don’t forget your fitbits!)

On Instagram – Nothing says spring like the flood of rainbow colors on Instagram! My pick this week is the wonderfully color-coded bath accessories displayed by The Organizing Store. This deserves all of the heart-emoji smiley faces and rainbows you can type!

On the Playlist – Bon Jovi’s This House is Not for Sale album, as I prepare to see them tonight in concert! I’m liking this new album, but, I can’t wait to hear them sing their oldies including my all time favorite Bon Jovi song… drumroll…. Who Says You Can’t Go Home!JBJ_touronsale_bnr
Hope you have a great weekend! Let me know some of your favorite things AND what you think Ellis Grey wanted to tell Meredith in the comments below!

My Friday Favorites 02.19.16

On TV – The last two weeks of Grey’s Anatomy have been great, but I do not want to hear anymore – “put Meredith and Alex together” possible story lines. Please Shonda Rhimes – do not do this! Maybe Episode 10 should have been called – “All I Want is You and You and You and You.” I loved Meredith’s  Wizard of Oz reference – “they were all there.”  When her therapist states you aren’t married anymore and you aren’t a widow either, he follows it up with the question – Who are you? She says she doesn’t know. And this is why I believe Cristina had to leave, Derrick had to die – so the show could answer that one question.

On the Page –  It’s the end of February! It’s that time of year when all the March magazines start arriving with bright colors like green for spring! Time to organize and spring clean.

FF apples grn

This post was all ready to go on Thursday night.
I had it scheduled to post Friday morning.
And then I watched Grey’s Anatomy.

Here is what I had written:
On TV-
This week Mad Men continued to prove why it is one of the best television shows ever made. “The Forecast” had our beloved characters all looking towards the future: Peggy and her performance review, Joan’s newest possibility for love, and Don, ultimately standing alone outside of his now sold penthouse.  I loved Roger’s monologue about his second divorce,  Don’s elevator ride with the waitress and his neighbors, and the reintroduction of Glen.  The scene with Sally and Don at the bus was one of the best written scenes of the entire series.

“You know what I’m going to write down, for my dream? I want to get on that bus,
and get away from you and mom, and hopefully be a different person than you two.”
“You are like your mother and me, and you are going to find that out.
You’re a very beautiful girl. It’s up to you to be more than that.”

*SPOILER ALERT*

I still stand by the choice of Mad Men as incredible television this week. But HOW could I not mention the surprising and incredibly ironic death of a TV character every woman has swooned over sometime in the past eleven years?  At first, I too, was shocked. Why? Logistically, Patrick Dempsey was still in the middle of a two year contract. Storyline, MerDer, who have been secondary characters in the past few seasons were resurfacing as the couple who millions of people watched for years.  After all the tragedies that Derrick has survived, (being shot, a plane crash) it was the negligence of doctors that cost him his life. We got to hear his own account of how he, the brilliant neurosurgeon, would have handled his own case. Despite the fact that one doctor (Scandal’s Jeanine – the White House Intern Fitz supposedly had an affair with – remember we are in Shondaland) was insisting a CT should have been ordered, this idea was refuted, and when the on-call surgeon was going to take over an hour to come in, Dr. Sheppard told us himself, it would be too late. It is my belief that the show is and always will be Meredith’s story of her resilience.  And even though this is a widely unpopular turn of events, I get it.  How will Meredith cope with the loss of Derrick, raise two kids on her own, and continue her important career?  She will fight on the same way she has through everything else.  As I think back to last season when Cristina said good-bye, her thoughts to Meredith were really a big clue we were heading to a Post-McDreamy Grey’s Anatomy.

“You are a gifted surgeon with an extraordinary mind.
Don’t let what he wants eclipse what you need.

He’s very dreamy, but he is not the sun. You are.”

Of course, we just thought they are breaking up or he is moving to D.C. – but again, I remind you, we are still in Shondaland.

On the Page-  I’m reading lots of articles in the May 2015 Parents magazine including Be Cautious of Rewards, Put on Your Toddler Googles, Busy Morning Breakfasts, and The Ten Most Influential Millennial Moms. I bookmarked the How to Rock Your Disney Trip for a year to come.

In My Shopping Cart – When I arrived at Target at 10 am last Sunday, the only Lilly Pulitzer left were the signs hanging from the ceiling.  The Target crew told me they sold out in 6 minutes.  I knew that would be the case. I still bought Olivia some new spring / summer clothes from the many adorable and affordable options.  Maybe this dress isn’t Lilly, but it was only $8!

FF BLUE AND GREEN DIAMONDS

Here are my Friday Favorites – one day late!

On TV-  A plane crash in Seattle stirs up lots of past emotions as the newer members of Sloan Grey Memorial team learn the truth about what happened to many of their co-workers.  Alex makes a huge reveal to Arizona. Owen and Cristina, I mean, Amelia go back and forth. Meredith is in a state of panic after not hearing from Derek all day, while knowing he missed his meeting in D.C.  Throughout the episode, flashbacks fill us in on the last MerDer conversation. McDreamy is back – see below – and wants to go for baby #3?!  The last scene was classic gut-wrenching Greys showing Meredith through a window with the reflection of police car lights circling across her and her home.

#WhereIsDerek“But the truth is, you don’t know how you’ll react to your worst case scenario.
None of us do.  Not until it happens.”

On the Page-  Glamour
is a magazine I faithfully read in my twenties.  Now in my forties, I find cooking, home decor, and family magazines are more my speed.  But when I saw three of my favorite ladies on the May cover of Glamour: Sarah Jessica Parker, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Kerry Washington, I tossed the issue onto the supermarket conveyor belt.  I’m glad I did! In addition to the great article about these three power women teaming up to bring awareness to female veterans, I also enjoyed reading up on fashion trends, beauty tips, and taking a quiz to see what type of snacker I am. I never would have thought twenty years later the “Hey It’s Ok to...” page would still make me laugh, but it turns out it does!  My favorite on this month’s list: “Hey It’s Ok to…just RSVP no without an explanation  It’s only happy hour, not jury duty.”  I need to cut this one out and post it near my computer so the next time I start feeling guilty about responding no while trying to think of new and creative ways to say – “I would rather be home with my family,” I’ll be reminded Hey, it’s OK!

On the Computer- I found this new-to-me blog, The Summery Umbrella, on twitter and I loved looking through the whole site! That’s what I love about social media – just clicking a little star to say: this is one of my favorites… leads you to amazing people and all they are accomplishing.  Anything with the tag line – Refresh Your Life – is something I want to read.  Look at this amazing before and after bathroom pic from Small Updates with Big Results.  (An aqua and apple green bathroom!  Yes, please!!) But don’t stop there – click away – every post is great!

In the Kitchen-  This is on my Sunday Meal Prep menu this week! Quinoa Stuffed Peppers from Easy as Apple Pie.  A delicious combination of two things I usually make during meal prep: quinoa and roasted peppers – so why not put them together?  I can’t wit to try this!

On my Pinterest Boards- I started a new Pinterest Board this week – Juice Glasses – to help me gathering pics of one of my favorite things to collect: tiny, colorful, glass cups!  This pic led me to a cute article Pretty Little Things to Collect and Display from Babble.  Image number 4 could have been from my mother’s house! Love the garden knobs, antique keys, printers blocks, and vintage milk bottles.  (Ok, maybe ANY of these images could have been in my mother’s house!!)

Tick, tock, just a few more hours until the weekend, and for me Spring Break!
Let’s jump right in and talk about all the things I am loving this week.

On TV – #DidHeCheat Shonda Rhimes has gone back to the basics with Grey’s Anatomy for the past few weeks. I know what some of you are saying – you still watch that show?  Yes I do! And if you loved it when it first started, you would like the direction it is going in now. Interesting cases about patients we care about. Lots of action in the on-call rooms (Owen and Amelia!?  Even though I am not happy that Amelia and James from Private Practice didn’t last, I am happy that Owen can finally kiss someone without hot grate steam all over him.) Hanging out in the back hallway on the gurneys talking about Izzy, George, and when Callie was straight!  When Meredith called Derrick and another woman answered her phone, she kept asking “Who is this?” And the only answer she could come up with is the same answer Addison Montgomery came up with when she met Meredith in the Season 1 finale.

meredith_greysanatomy_whoisthis?

“You must be the woman sleeping with my husband.”

greysanatomy_meetaddisonThat brings us to last night’s episode. Did he or didn’t he? I guess it doesn’t matter what we think, just what Meredith thinks. It also didn’t take Hunt long to show his short temper to Amelia (helloooo this isn’t Cristina, take it down a notch. And did anyone else forget he lives in the trailer?)  My final thought: Alex Karev is still my favorite!

On the Page –  Real Simple Magazine is celebrating 15 years.  The subscriber cover for April 2015 is a celebration of years of Real Simple. So many of these covers I remember keeping for months just because I loved the way they looked!  The single lemon on the Back to Basic Cleaning issue, The No Cost Makeover with the apple green wall, Organize Your Life with the turquoise and orange boxes, How to Save Money all Year Long with the granny smith apples  – all of these lasted on my desk for inspiration for months after they came in the mail.  I have subscribed to this magazine for many years and it is always one that I renew, without even a question.

On the Computer- This article has shown up on my Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn feeds recently.  The Costs of Parenting: Stay Home or Return to Work? A Personal and Professional Decision With Financial Implications. This is a conversation I have had with many friends lately. Is there a way to balance work and home so I am happy with what I am doing in both places?  Am I making enough money to even justify having a job outside of the home, or is my paycheck going to childcare? This article gives the hard facts (dollar signs) of what it costs to raise a child and how it will effect your paycheck.  I also love that they chose a man for the picture. Warning: Contents of the article may be slightly depressing. Click carefully.

In the Kitchen- I have been eating a lot of roasted butternut squash lately (I know it is a fall veggie, but I buy it organic frozen to enjoy all year.) I searched the web to find some recipes with my new favorite go-to ingredient. I found Fusilli with Mushrooms and Roasted Butternut Squash from Primavera Kitchen. Looks great doesn’t it?  Not only does it have butternut squash AND pasta (yum) but it has my other must-haves when reading a recipe -the words EASY and DELICIOUS!

Owl Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! Here are all the things I’m loving this week!

On TV –

  • I haven’t talked about TV in awhile. We did have some great season finales this spring!  Chicago Fire & PD, Scandal, Grey’s, Parenthood!  I can’t wait for all of these to start back up. I binged watched Orange is the New Black Seasons 1 & 2 (I never watched it!  It kind of gave me anxiety.  Anyone else? But I still watched it.) The Divide (new on WE and produced by Fitz from Scandal is taped on my DVR.) I also am watching The Night Shift – even though I would call it Grey’s Lite.  TC (combo of Derrick / McDreamy and Owen / War Issues) has unresolved feelings for his ex Jordan (Meredith) who is dating Bailey from Party of 5 while TC is dating Anna from One Tree Hill…. look, not much is on in the summer.  Growing up summer always meant – no more TV until Fall.  But YAY for USA Network who does summer shows!  I’ve been watching Suits all summer. Mike and Harvey are a divided team.  Jessica is dating and hired Dr. Joe from Parenthood. Rachel is in dangerous territory!!

Here are two magazines I have been flipping through a lot! Good Housekeeping June 2014 Issue – great recipes for BBQing on the grill this summer from main dishes, to sides, to s’mores desserts.  House Beautiful July / August 2014 Issue – tips on small spaces, using color, and creating storage.

On the Computer –

  • I had two bananas left in a bunch and I knew they weren’t going to last many more days.  I wanted to try something different than my usual banana bread.  Off to Pinterest I went! There I found: A Little Bit of This, That, and Everything – Banana Cookies .  Directions looked easy, cookies looked delicious = perfect recipe for me.  Olivia was a big help making them. They are really yummy!

In my Beach Bag-

  • Besides towels and sunscreen – Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld. I’m not too far into the book yet but I am intrigued by these identical sisters who seem anything but identical!

On my Pinterest Boards –

  •  I’ve been researching outdoor / patio spaces (even though I already made over my patio!)  But I’m helping a friend organize ideas for her patio.  I came across this picture and I just loved it!  So colorful!  I would give credit, but the website Pinterest links the photo to, no longer exists.  (Is that something that drives anyone else crazy on Pinterest?)

Happy New Year – and where the heck have I been?

Where have I been?  I don’t even have a good answer! I wish I had some fabulous story like I was whisked aways for a two month journey through Europe … but I must be honest, it has been nothing like that!  Work has been busy, family life has been busy and I have been doing a lot of great projects that I SHOULD be blogging about!

Ok – here is a end of the year wrap up for My Color Coded Life!

Shows I am still watching on current TV –
Scandal, Nashville, The Carrie Diaries, Awkward, Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order SVU,  White Collar, Suits, Parenthood, Mad Men

Noteworthy moments – Jackson Avery on Grey’s – stop – she doesn’t deserve you! Will Lexington on Nashville – it gets better!  Olivia and Fitz on Scandal – The Vermont Years?  (I’m #TeamJake – I know that’s not popular.)

Shows I stopped DVRing and or caring about Revenge – all fall I tried to care, but I cancelled the recording on my DVR – I didn’t care who shot Emily. Once Upon a Time – I think I need to wait until this series is over and binge watch it during a summer.  I taped the whole first half of the season of Betrayal – but haven’t watched a single episode … tell me – is it worth it?

Shows I am ten years behind on and watching on Netflix –
I just finished Southland –  love that Ryan Atwood, Lucas Scott and Ponyboy Curtis were all on one show together!
Chicago Fire is next up in my Netflix queue.  And I better get on it because Chicago PD is starting – a spinoff of both Chicago Fire and SVU.

My House Makeover –  I am ready to write posts revealing Olivia’s bedroom and our Living Room. I am waiting to take Christmas decorations down to showcase the work we did on each room.  Next up this spring and summer – turning our garage into storage and our laundry facilities and converting the basement into a Family Room.  Follow my inspirations on these projects on Pinterest : Basement Makeover and Garage / Laundry Room

My Friday Favorites

Happy Friday everyone! I took today off from work so my weekend started last night – BUT some of you only have a few hours left! My faithful readers know I love the weekends, a chance to step away from the grind, spend time with family (or get some precious “me” time.)  I also love recapping all the things I loved about the week in my weekly blog – My Friday Favorites.  So let’s jump right in!

Here is what I am loving this week!

On TV –

  • Suits  is still the only show I am currently watching live!  This week was another good episode…WHAT is Donna getting herself into?  And is Harvey going to pull the old “even if I don’t want you, no one else can have you” routine??

Donna going on her date - Suits

Now is the time of year when you can start reading up on all your favorites shows that are currently filming to start back in the Fall.  Things that I have taken notice to:  Parenthood is moving from Tuesdays to Thursdays – this is a BOO for me .. because now it is up against Greys and Scandal … I’ll have to set the DVR.  The Carrie Diaries is moving from Mondays to Fridays – this is a YAY for me as I never, ever have plans on a Friday night so I will most definitely be able to watch this one.

  • How to Make a Paper Chain Garland from Hank & Hunt  –  such a simple decoration to make and it looks great at any event!  I love these chains as it brings back memories of my childhood when my older sisters would make me advent calendars in December as Paper Chains. Each day I would remove one link which had a secret message inside.   Hank & Hunt is doing a 30 Days of Garland segment – so if you like making banners and garland – check them out for some new creative ideas!

On my Pinterest Board – again I will reference my weekly “Pins You Would Love” email. It tells me great boards to follow and pins that they think I will favorite and repin. (Even though this weekly email proves that Big Brother is watching us on the internet – I still love when it is exactly right!) Here are some boards they told me to follow (and I did.)
